Safety Signs illusion

Yesterday at the airport I watched the exact same scene play out every 20 seconds.

⠀

Passengers loaded with hea

vy suitcases stepped straight onto the escalator directly underneath a sign prohibiting luggage.

⠀

Every single traveler ignored it completely.

⠀

Honestly I get them. The elevator is tucked away at the far end of the terminal and nobody is going on a trek with heavy bags when the escalator is 2 meters away. You could project that warning across the Empire State Building in flashing neon and people would still take their bags up those stairs.

⠀

It is the exact same theater happening in manufacturing plants and warehouses every day.

⠀

Someone slaps a sticker on the wall that says "Caution: Machine in Motion" or "Safety First", checks an internal audit box, and hopes for the best.

⠀

Warning signs provide a cheap illusion of control. It is tempting to believe that bold red fonts train behavior, but human nature follows convenience every single time. Whenever the safe option requires walking farther, waiting longer, or complicating the task, people abandon it on the spot.

⠀

Real safety culture relies on physical design and an honest understanding of human psychology. If you want luggage off an escalator, install bollards at the entrance that physically block wide bags or place the elevator 2 meters away.

⠀

Warning stickers look fantastic in safety reports. Human behavior on the floor responds only to friction and design.
